Looking for a NAS with built-in online backup

NAS (Networks Attached Storage) drives have been around for quite some time and so have online backup services but strangely it is incredibly difficult to combine the two. I own drives from Iomega and Buffalo but so far it has been impossible to find a reliable service that allows me to backup my NAS drives without installing software on my computer.

Why can’t Iomega install Mozy (which is also owned by EMC) on the NAS drives they sell? I know there are some hacks to make backups from a NAS to Amazon’s S3, but I would much rather make use of the space I have at Mozy.

*rant over* 🙂 Oh, and I would love suggestions in the comments for a NAS which can do automatic independent online backups!

I’m with you on this one! I’ve been using Carbonite for last 3 years but I am forced to sync my external HD with WinXP’s internal drive. I would much rather own a NAS drive that backs up directly to an online backup service, whether Mozy, Carbonite or other. It makes perfect sense.

Why not using Amazon S3? It’s cheap. And it works. QNAP NAS can backup or syncronize it’s files with Amazon S3 right out of the box.
